A neuroscience lab assistant who designed an EEG attention study — an ED offer from Dartmouth.
Student Background
An international-school student with IB 39, AP Psychology and Biology 5, 5 — she assisted in a brain-science lab but only as a “data recorder” with little independent thought.
The Challenge
Dartmouth neuroscience rewards academic exploration tied to social application. How do you connect basic research to education intervention?
Mentor Strategy
Research upgrade
we had her read Dartmouth lab papers and design a small study — “attention training for middle-schoolers” — using EEG to test how learning environments affect attention. She secured ethics approval, recruited 20 students, and ran an 8-week intervention (mindfulness plus environment design).
Essays and fit
her essays argued that “neuroscience is not a lab luxury but a tool for better education,” with outreach emails to a Dartmouth professor discussing and refining her design. She was admitted ED to the intersection of neuroscience and educational psychology.
The Result
Admitted ED to Dartmouth College (Neuroscience & Educational Psychology)
